Israel's Explorium shuts down after raising $127M as founder's Base44 thrives

What's the deal? Israeli startup Explorium is shutting down after nearly nine years, co-founders Omer Har and Or Tamir announced in a farewell post. The company raised more than $127 million and reached roughly 130 employees, but said its recent growth never became a sustainable business.

Why now? Founded in 2017, Explorium built a data enrichment platform before pivoting toward generative AI and tools for AI agents. Its founders say it kept growing over the past year but could not convert that momentum into a viable model.

The backdrop: Backers included Insight Partners, Zeev Ventures, Emerge, F2 CapitalDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →, and 01 AdvisorsDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →. The closure lands amid pressure on Israeli software firms; an Israel Innovation Authority survey found software had the sector's highest layoff rate in the first half of 2026.

The twist: Third co-founder Maor Shlomo left Explorium to build Base44Dealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →, an AI app builder he developed largely alone. Wix bought the bootstrapped startup for about $80 million in cash plus earn-outs in June 2025.

What's the endgame? Base44 has since soared inside Wix, crossing $100 million in annual recurring revenue around March 2026 and passing $200 million in late August, according to Shlomo. It now spans an app builder, AI agents, a standalone backend, and its own fine-tuned model.

The signal: The split outcome shows how quickly demand is shifting toward AI-native products. Explorium's failure to convert a data business into an AI play, set against Base44's rise, marks a sharp sign of how fast AI is commoditising data companies.
