Australia's US$37.2M additive manufacturing CRC opens first state node in South Australia

What's the deal? The Additive Manufacturing Cooperative Research Centre (AMCRC) has launched its first state-based node in South Australia, backed by the state government and hosted by Flinders University at Tonsley. The node will work with Adelaide and Flinders Universities to connect local manufacturers with research expertise and speed up adoption of additive manufacturing.

What's the endgame? The node gives South Australian businesses a gateway to the AMCRC's national network and collaborative research. The aim is to help firms develop new products and technologies and move ideas to commercial outcomes more quickly.

Why South Australia? The state has a concentration of advanced manufacturers, defence programs and research capability. Additive manufacturing is reshaping production across defence, aerospace, healthcare, energy and space — sectors where South Australia is already investing.

AMCRC Chair Susan Jeanes said the state has "strong industry, world-class research and a willingness to innovate." She added: "If Australia is to compete globally in advanced manufacturing, we need strong regional hubs that bring industry, researchers and government together."

The ecosystem view: The node builds on a national push. The AMCRC launched with US$37.2M in Commonwealth funding and expected partner contributions of about US$129.4M over seven years. Its first five industry-led projects, announced in May, drew more than US$7.12M in combined investment, while a separate US$2.1M program helps SMEs test adoption.

The signal: State Development Minister Chris Picton called the node "another important step in growing high-value industries, creating skilled jobs and supporting South Australia's economic future." But the launch describes a collaboration gateway rather than new production capacity or quantified local investment — its significance will hinge on the projects and commercial outcomes that follow.
