Bariflo lands $211K grant from oil-sector platform MC² Plus for AI wastewater tech

What's the deal? Bariflo Cybernetics, an Odisha-based startup, has secured a US$271.6K milestone-linked grant from MC² Plus, an energy innovation platform led by India's Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas. Disbursements are tied to agreed milestones, according to founder and CEO Mrityunjay Sahu.

What's the endgame? Founded in 2018, Bariflo wants factories to get more use out of existing effluent treatment plants rather than building new ones. Its proprietary IoT sensors track wastewater parameters such as pH, total dissolved solids, and flow; AI models then set chemical dosage and treatment steps, automating decisions operators would otherwise make manually.

The new money will fund upcoming pilots and installations at more industrial sites. Sahu says the technology has shown potential to cut energy use by roughly 25%.

Bariflo is preparing a pilot with Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited to test treatment efficiency, energy use, and chemical consumption; it has already run pilots at Indian Oil's R&D centre in Faridabad.

By the numbers: Before this grant, Bariflo had raised close to $1 million through grants, equity, and debt. It generated about US$163K in revenue in 2025-26, and charges an upfront deployment fee plus a monthly service fee.

What could go wrong? Selling to large industrial firms and public sector undertakings means working with R&D teams and multiple decision-makers through lengthy evaluations before any purchase. The pilot results, rather than the grant itself, will show whether the technology scales. Bariflo names Ion ExchangeDealroom has a profile for this one. The signal: The grant lands as India pushes treated wastewater into industrial reuse, with refinery and power-plant projects and new state reuse policies. The amount is modest beside DigitalPaaniDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →'s US$2.99M raise in September, but a successful BPCL pilot could mark Bariflo's route from trials to commercial adoption. "Our immediate priority is to accelerate commercialisation and establish a scalable business," Sahu says.
