Exajoint wins €7,500 Start Cup Piemonte with hip-surgery guidance system

What's the deal? Exajoint, a life sciences startup backed by Turin incubator I3P, won the 22nd Start Cup Piemonte Valle d'Aosta, awarded on November 3 at the PoliTo Energy Center. It took the €7,500 first prize for exAC, a system to guide the orientation of hip prostheses during surgery.

How it works: The system uses cameras and sensors to measure the orientation of both the cup and the femoral stem during a hip replacement. The goal is to help surgeons position implants more precisely.

Why it matters: Finalists were selected from roughly 180 business plans. The top six teams advance to Italy's National Innovation Award.

What's the endgame? Exajoint is targeting a crowded, active field. Established players are already bringing intraoperative hip-replacement guidance into routine care, and startup Gyder SurgicalDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → is developing a competing navigation system.

What could go wrong? The win is an early-stage milestone, not proof of clinical or commercial traction. Exajoint's eventual significance will hinge on evidence of accuracy, usability, regulatory progress, and adoption — none of which a competition result can demonstrate.

The signal: Interest in surgical navigation is growing, and regional contests like Start Cup remain a route for university-linked deep-tech teams to gain visibility and early funding before they face the market.
