Ethiopia's IT Park and Awash Capital sign deal to widen tech financing

What's the deal? The Ethiopian IT Park Corporation and Awash Capital S.C. have signed a cooperation framework to improve access to finance and investment for Ethiopia's technology sector. The deal was signed by IT Park chief executive officer Belete Esubalew and Awash Capital chief executive officer Andualem Hailu. No funding pool was disclosed.

What's the endgame? The framework targets investment readiness for startups and small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), new financing channels, capital-market training, and investment in IT Park infrastructure. The IT Park Corporation aims to become Africa's leading AI-driven technology hub by 2030.

Why now? Ethiopia is building out a formal capital market, and Awash Capital — the investment-banking arm of Awash BankDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → — adds a newer channel for corporate finance and advisory. The framework connects that emerging capacity to the country's growing tech ecosystem.

What could go wrong? The agreement sets out intentions, not amounts. Without disclosed funding, eligibility rules, or a timetable, its practical impact on tech firms and SMEs remains unclear.

The signal: The deal fits a broader push to widen SME finance in Ethiopia, alongside a €40 million EIB Global and Dashen BankDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → lending package in October and a UNDPDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →-backed credit-guarantee scheme that helped 37 startups and SMEs secure ETB 85.7 million in loans by the end of 2025. As Ethiopia develops its capital market, more channels are emerging to fund a digital economy that still relies heavily on grants and guarantees.
