UK launches £700M Strategic Sites Accelerator; South Yorkshire eyes Runway Park
What's the deal? The UK government has launched a £700m Strategic Sites Accelerator to help unlock major development sites, and South Yorkshire mayor Oliver Coppard says the fund could help bring forward the region's Runway Park innovation district in the Don Valley.
Why now? South Yorkshire has not yet been awarded money from the national programme. Coppard has named Runway Park and the Don Valley as the region's target for the funding, and GOV.UK confirms South Yorkshire's engagement with the scheme.
What's the endgame? Runway Park is planned as a high-tech jobs park near Sheffield. "Now we have an opportunity to build on our success," Coppard said, pointing to the site as a focus for future growth.
The signal: The accelerator is a national programme aimed at unblocking stalled development sites across the country. For South Yorkshire, securing a share would mark a step toward turning its innovation district ambitions into physical jobs and investment — but the funds are not yet confirmed.
