Sequoia shuts London office six years in, raises $10B elsewhere

What's the deal? Sequoia Capital is closing its London office, ending a six-year European presence and triggering a shake-up of its investment team. The Silicon Valley firm said it would consolidate around its Bay Area headquarters while still backing European startups. "We simply don't see the need for a local presence," it said.

Why now? The closure is part of a broader restructuring. Sequoia says it has raised about $10 billion in new funds, scrapped its Arc accelerator and Scouts programmes, flattened its partnership structure, and merged its early-stage and growth operations.

The team split: The move has divided Sequoia's London partners. Luciana Lixandru, who helped build the European operation, said she would remain a partner but stay in Europe: "My conviction on Europe hasn't moved, and neither am I." Anas Biad is relocating to San Francisco with the firm, while Julien Bek wrote, "Sequoia is consolidating in the US. I'm staying in Europe." George Robson's status remains unclear.

What's the endgame? Sequoia insists Europe will keep producing exceptional companies and that it can support them from California. The firm entered London in 2020 amid heavy competition among US venture giants for Europe's most promising startups.

What could go wrong? The reversal, just six years after opening, risks being read across the UK and European ecosystem as a vote of no confidence — even as Sequoia says it remains committed to European founders.

The signal: The retreat matters more for where a major investor deploys its people than for European funding levels. The European Commission has flagged the region's reliance on US capital for AI investment, making Sequoia's choice of base a pointed one.
