Strong Life Care triples in size with 18-home care acquisition
What's the deal? UK operator Strong Life Care has acquired 18 purpose-built care homes from Maria Mallaband Care Homes, tripling its size and quadrupling its annual turnover. The deal value was undisclosed. It takes the Yorkshire-based, family-owned operator to more than 2,000 employees and 1,500 beds across Yorkshire & Humber, the North East, the North West, the East Midlands, and Norfolk.
Why now? The purchase follows substantial investment in leadership, operational infrastructure, and digital technology, with more acquisitions already in the pipeline. Strong Life Care had already bought four Yorkshire homes from Maria Mallaband in September, so this marks an accelerated expansion rather than a one-off.
The hire: Ahead of the deal, the group headhunted James Hopkins as its new chief executive officer and recruited two regional managers, a head of quality and compliance, and a head of procurement. It also appointed a new financial controller and management accountant to support a workforce of more than 2,000.
What's the endgame? Founder and chairman Harpreet Banwait started the company in 2010 after his family struggled to find culturally appropriate care for his grandfather. "This is a game-changing moment for Strong Life Care," he said, describing an ambition to build "a world-class care organisation."
What could go wrong? Rapid scaling brings integration risk across five regions. The Competition and Markets Authority has scrutinised large care-home combinations over local competition concerns, making the buyer's footprint and the homes' locations important.
