Solgram raises $1M to build cold-chain premium grocery in India
What's the deal? Solgram, a premium grocery platform founded by former Zepto Cafe executive Shashank Shekhar Sharma, has raised over $1 million in a pre-seed round led by DSG Consumer PartnersDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → and Saama CapitalDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →. Hospitality entrepreneur Kapil ChopraDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → also participated.
Why now? The round closed within a quarter of the company's launch in Gurugram. Sharma said he first bootstrapped the business with roughly US$407.4K in personal savings before bringing in institutional backers.
What's the endgame? Solgram wants to capture 25% of its target market by 2030. The capital will fund its temperature-controlled supply chain, technology, sourcing partnerships, and expansion across the National Capital Region (NCR).
The platform runs across more than 14 food and beverage micro-categories, with over 1,100 SKUs and 170-plus brands spanning fresh produce, dairy, meat and seafood, bakery, and gourmet pantry. Its cold chain covers sourcing, inspection, storage, fulfilment, and last-mile delivery, with orders packed in insulated thermal packaging.
Where it's going: Solgram is live in Gurugram and plans to cover Delhi-NCR over the coming months, then the six largest metro markets within 12 to 18 months. It uses small dark stores of 1,200 to 1,500 square feet, estimating 8 to 12 will cover NCR.
Sharma argues the opportunity sits in a gap left by quick commerce. "We were all building for scale. The focus was on getting more orders and solving for the bottom of the pyramid. But what happens to the customer who wants to buy premium products? That segment was largely missed," he said. Nearly half of orders currently come through scheduled delivery, which he reads as demand for planned purchases.
What could go wrong? The pre-seed round is a small early bet in a crowded field. Bengaluru-based FirstClub raised $55 million in June to expand premium grocery and quick commerce, while Elixiir Foods'Dealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → FreshTerra entered with $9 million in seed funding. Major delivery platforms are also adding gourmet ranges, tightening competition for both customers and cold-chain capacity.
The signal: Investors are warming to premium grocery as quick commerce saturates everyday essentials. Solgram's near-term test is proving repeat demand and sound unit economics in Gurugram before its 2030 ambitions become more than a target.
