China's Zhizi Guangyuan raises nine-figure yuan seed across 5 rounds in 6 months

What's the deal? Chinese photonic computing startup Zhizi Guangyuan has completed a seed round worth several hundred million yuan, led by a group that includes Yunqi PartnersDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →, Atom VenturesDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →, Cathay Haitong, K2VC, Tongxin CapitalDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →, and Shanghai Jiao Tong University's AI Future Fund. The company has closed five consecutive seed rounds since launching in May 2026.

What's the endgame? Founded by Cheng Yuan, an associate professor at Shanghai Jiao Tong University's School of Artificial Intelligence, Zhizi Guangyuan is building reconfigurable all-optical computing architecture and photonic processors. The aim is to use the parallel properties of light for AI operations, sidestepping the process-scaling, power, and heat limits of traditional electronic chips.

What's the product? The startup is developing two lines: server-side optoelectronic acceleration boards and end-side photonic computing chips. First versions of both have been sent for tapeout, with deployable products planned over the next six months.

Where the money goes: Funds will back chip research and tapeout iteration, senior-level hiring, and application and ecosystem expansion. The company has built an R&D team of nearly 50 people whose core members have taped out dozens of optical chips and published close to 20 papers in Nature and Science journals.

Why now? AI competition is shifting from peak computing power to effective output per kilowatt-hour, Cheng says. As agents move from single-round Q&A to continuous reasoning and tool use, token consumption is rising, making cost and heat practical constraints.

What could go wrong? China's photonic computing sector is still early, with few available products, most of them small-scale and task-specific. Zhizi Guangyuan's chips have only been taped out — they must still clear packaging, testing, and customer validation before any advantage over conventional accelerators is proven.

The signal: The round reflects brisk investor appetite for photonic computing in China. Optical-interconnect startup PhotonNex recently raised about US$13.8M, while Shanghai Jiao Tong University and LightelligenceDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → launched a joint photonic-computing lab and Lightelligence pursues a Hong Kong listing. The open question is whether funding and ambitious performance claims translate into commercial chips.
