Apolarion lands $183K grant for plasma-based seed treatment
What's the deal? Swiss cleantech startup ApolarionDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →, an EPFL spin-off, has won a US$137.5K (roughly $183,000) grant from Venture KickDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → to advance its chemical-free seed treatment technology. Founded by Jesus Poley and Luke Simons, the company is developing a modular device that uses cold atmospheric plasma to eliminate harmful microorganisms from seeds.
What's the endgame? The technology uses only air and electricity to generate reactive particles that neutralise pathogens while preserving seeds' ability to germinate. Apolarion is targeting Swiss and European markets first, offering seed treatment companies an alternative to chemical coatings and heat-based methods.
What's the money for? The grant will fund Apolarion's first field trials and initial customer deployments. The company plans to cover operational facilities, equipment, and personnel for its pilot programmes.
Conventional seed treatments often rely on chemical coatings that leave residues in the soil, while heat-based alternatives demand significant energy and can fall short. Apolarion's device aims to sidestep both through low energy use and flexible application.
"The Venture Kick program has been so important in our journey," said Luke Simons, chief executive officer and co-founder. "It introduced us to the startup network in Switzerland and gave us access to world-class training, coaching and advisors."
The signal: The grant is an early-stage milestone, not a major financing round, and it places Apolarion in roughly the 58th percentile by deal size. Rivals are drawing far more: BioConsortia raised $15 million in October to scale microbial seed treatments, while Gravity GardensDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → and MycoverseDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → pulled in €2.6 million and €2.4 million respectively for chemical-free alternatives. Apolarion's plasma approach offers a distinct route, but it still trails competitors already building manufacturing and distribution.
