Zafrens adds $6M to Series A as Trill Impact makes first TechBio bet

What's the deal? Zafrens, a San Diego-based drug discovery company, has raised a $6 million Series A extension led by Trill ImpactDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → Ventures, with existing investor imec.xpandDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → participating. The round funds advancement of the company's internal drug pipeline and the expansion of its screening platform.

What's the endgame? Zafrens built the Z-Screen platform, which combines microfluidics, longitudinal cell imaging, and sequencing to test large numbers of potential medicines at once. The goal is to link molecular data to cell function at high throughput, so biological hypotheses can be validated faster than traditional methods allow.

Why now? AI and computational biology can now generate drug candidates quickly, creating demand for ways to test those predictions in complex biological systems. The round marks Trill Impact Ventures' first investment in TechBio, the area where biology, technology, and data meet.

What's in a name? Alongside the financing, Zafrens has reshaped its leadership. Paul Laikind has been appointed chairman of the board, Kevin Eastwood joins as chief business officer, and Joey Azofeifa recently joined as chief technology officer. Bita Sehat, a partner at Trill Impact Advisory, will take a board seat.

The financing builds on earlier backing. Zafrens announced $23 million in launch funding in 2023 and raised an earlier Series A extension in 2025, bringing total capital to $31 million before this round.

"What attracted us to Zafrens is its ability to generate the experimental evidence needed to interrogate complex biology at scale," Sehat said. Founder and chief executive officer Swamy Vijayan said the company had "reached an important inflection point as we translate the extraordinary scale and resolution of our platform into drug discovery programs."

The signal: The round reflects continued investor appetite for drug-discovery platforms, even as the recovering biotech market steers most capital toward large rounds and companies with stronger validation — prominent AI drug-discovery firms have landed billion-dollar financings, far above Zafrens' scale. The modest follow-on keeps the platform funded, but the announcement alone does not establish commercial or clinical proof.
