Windward buys Azimut.ai to add camera-based eyes to its maritime AI platform
What's the deal? Windward, a maritime AI company, has acquired Azimut.aiDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →, a maritime visual intelligence firm, for undisclosed terms. The deal adds an optical sensing layer to Windward's multi-source platform and marks its first move into ground- and ship-based sensors.
What's the endgame? Windward places cameras at key chokepoints and ports to identify and fingerprint vessels in real time. It then fuses those visual identifications with existing data on ownership, sanctions, cargo, and behaviour — turning a single sighting into what the company calls an "explainable assessment."
Why now? Not every vessel transmits its location, and signals that do exist can be switched off, jammed, or obscured by weather. The camera layer aims to keep vessels visible even when they go dark to evade detection.
What changes for customers? Defense agencies, law enforcement, and commercial clients gain tighter situational awareness. The system is built for privacy: it provides no raw images or video, and is designed to analyse vessel activity rather than identify individuals.
"Acquiring Azimut is our first step in building a proprietary visual intelligence layer that gives us full visibility at sea," said Ami Daniel, chief executive officer and co-founder of Windward. "In the age of Agentic AI, data is the new oil."
The signal: The deal extends a recent run of expansion. In April 2026, Windward bought US defense technology firm Prominent EdgeDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → for geospatial expertise, following FTV CapitalDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →'s 2025 take-private deal that made the company US-majority-owned. The moves point to Windward building both the data and the US government delivery footprint to compete for defense and security work — though with terms undisclosed, the acquisition's scale remains hard to gauge.
