Montana buys Danish design brand TAKT in sustainability push

What's the deal? Montana Furniture, the Danish maker of the modular Montana System, has acquired fellow Danish brand TAKTDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →, it announced in October. Terms were not disclosed. TAKT, known for its solid-wood furniture and sustainability focus, will continue as a collection called TAKT by Montana.

What's the endgame? Montana is best known for colourful, modular storage. The deal adds a solid-wood range and environmental expertise it does not currently have in depth.

"With the acquisition of TAKT, we are adding a materiality to our range that completes our universe," said Joakim Lassen, chief executive officer of Montana Furniture.

What changes? TAKT keeps its design heritage and designer collaborations, including the Cross series by Pearson Lloyd and the Turn Chair by Lysemose de Gier. Its Copenhagen showroom folds into Montana's, and the collection will sell through Montana's global retail and contract network. TAKT's staff will be integrated into Montana where possible.

Why now? Montana points to TAKT's work on materials and the environment as a strategic draw. The company already holds EU Ecolabel and PEFC certifications on parts of its range and has swapped polystyrene for moulded paper pulp in some packaging.

Henrik Lorensen, TAKT's founder and board chairman, will join Montana's board. "Now it is time for TAKT's next chapter, and we are delighted that it will be written together with Montana Furniture," he said.

The signal: The purchase fits a wave of consolidation among European furniture makers. Dutch group Lande Family bought design brand MontisDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → in October, and Sweden's Venture DesignDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → acquired Torkelson MöblerDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → in June. Montana's move stands out for pairing scale with a bet on sustainability credentials and a material its portfolio lacked.
