Setara launches with $90M to carry Actio's rare-disease pipeline
What's the deal? Setara Biosciences, a clinical-stage biotech formed by Actio Biosciences alumni, has raised a $90 million Series A. The company launches to develop precision medicines for rare genetic diseases, with a lead TRPV4 inhibitor for Charcot-Marie-Tooth type 2C.
Why now? The round follows Jazz Pharmaceuticals' acquisition of Actio for $820 million upfront, plus up to $500 million in milestones. Jazz kept Actio's lead KCNT1 epilepsy program; Setara takes the remaining non-epilepsy pipeline.
What's the endgame? The financing gives those assets a dedicated development vehicle and substantial runway. Jazz also holds a minority stake in the new company.
The signal: The Actio deal showed strategic buyer appetite for genetically targeted rare-disease medicines. Setara's launch keeps the leftover programs alive as a standalone bet — a reminder that acquisitions can seed new startups as much as end them.
