Abu Dhabi's SDF takes majority stake in UAE drone-ship maker MARIX
What's the deal? The Strategic Development FundDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → (SDF), an investment arm wholly owned by Abu Dhabi defence group EDGE, has agreed to acquire a majority stake in UAE maritime technology firm MARIX. The seller, Sovereign Global Solutions (SGS)Dealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →, retains a minority holding. Terms were not disclosed.
What does MARIX do? Formerly known as Sovereign Global Solution Middle East, MARIX designs, builds, and operates uncrewed and autonomous surface vessels. Its MARIP series pairs remote operation with data systems and artificial intelligence, letting offshore missions run with fewer crew at sea.
Why now? SDF first backed MARIX in 2022, taking a minority stake to fund its first prototype, the now-operational MARIP-12. The latest move follows the completion of design work on MARIP-24, a next-generation vessel expected to enter production in the UAE.
MARIP-24 is built for offshore work including subsea inspection, hydrographic surveys, and remotely operated vehicle operations. It is scheduled to debut at ADIPEC 2026 in Abu Dhabi, running November 2 to 5.
What's the endgame? The deal increases SDF's ownership to support MARIX's growth, local production, and expansion into international markets. "SDF's majority stake would support MARIX's growth," said Abdulla Naser Al Jaabari, managing director and chief executive officer of SDF, tying the investment to EDGE's strategy of backing dual-use technologies.
Jerome Paolini, shareholder and director of SGS, said the added investment would support MARIX's "development and expansion into international markets."
The signal: The move fits EDGE's broader push to build UAE-owned defence capabilities, following its controlling-stake deal for Italian engine maker CMDDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → and an agreement to acquire Brazilian aerospace firm AKAERDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →. Rather than a valuation-led transaction, this reads as a strategic capability investment timed to move an autonomous-vessel programme from design toward production.
