Nvidia weighs guaranteeing billions of Nscale debt for its $45B Anthropic data centre

What's the deal? Nvidia is in talks to give Nscale, the UK-founded AI cloud provider, billions of dollars in credit guarantees for the debt it needs to build a 460-megawatt data centre that Anthropic plans to use, The Information reported on 29 October 2026. Nothing is signed and the terms could change. Reuters said Nvidia, Nscale and Anthropic did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

How it would work: The guarantee would cover power and construction of the building itself, not leases or chips. The Information says it would be structured as a residual value guarantee, which would let Nscale raise investment-grade construction debt. If Nscale defaulted, Nvidia would step in, take over the facility for a while and help arrange a sale and re-lease. Based on industry estimates of about $12 billion to build a 1-gigawatt powered shell, the support would likely exceed $5 billion.

The Anthropic link: Nscale disclosed in its IPO prospectus in September a roughly $45 billion contract with Anthropic to rent the first 460MW building of its Monarch campus in West Virginia, which will be filled with Nvidia Vera Rubin GPUs. Anthropic plans a second phase of similar size. In the filing, Nscale said it had not yet secured binding commitments for the financing needed to deliver the contract.

Why Nvidia cares: Its biggest customers, Google, Microsoft and Amazon, are building their own chips, which makes neoclouds such as Nscale, CoreWeave and Firmus increasingly important buyers. According to The Information, Nvidia has already provided about $170 billion in credit support and investment to neoclouds and other large customers. One investor told the publication that Nvidia wants Nscale to succeed because of its tie to Anthropic, which, unlike most peers, spreads its compute across several chip suppliers.

The other side: Nvidia would be Nscale's chip supplier, shareholder and debt backstop all at once. Coverage from investingLive says this revives concerns about circular financing in the AI build-out. Nscale is preparing a NYSE listing (ticker NSCL) at a targeted valuation of about $30 billion. Bloomberg describes a listing attempt at a tumultuous moment for AI infrastructure stocks.
