Playa Rent raises €800,000 to scale self-service water sports stations

What's the deal? Playa RentDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →, a Pornic-based startup, has raised €800,000 ($891,365) in an early-stage round to accelerate the rollout of its self-service water sports equipment rental stations. The company plans to strengthen its presence in marinas and expand internationally.

The breakdown: The total includes €500,000 in equity from industrial partners and €300,000 in non-dilutive financing, mostly government grants. The Brittany Region is contributing about €100,000. Investor identities and the valuation were not disclosed.

What's the endgame? Playa Rent's stations let customers rent paddleboards and kayaks without staff on site or a prior reservation: users scan a QR code, enter contact details, and unlock the equipment via their phone. Operators — ports, local governments, and tourism firms — own the stations, set their own rates, and keep the rental revenue.

What's new? Beyond paddleboards and kayaks, the company is expanding into boat tenders and life rafts. Its Boaty'nGo service offers shared dinghy stations for space-constrained ports, while Bib'nGo provides automated life raft rentals.

What could go wrong? Playa Rent named Tahe OutdoorsDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →, a Vannes manufacturer, as its boat supplier, but Tahe Outdoors France has been in receivership since February 2026, with the deadline for takeover bids set for October 30. Operators must also weigh station acquisition costs, maintenance contracts, and operating expenses against revenue.

The signal: The round is modest — in the lower percentile for deal size — but it fits a broader shift toward renting water sports gear rather than buying it. Decathlon's Spanish kayak and paddleboard rental service grew from 72 stores in 2025 to 84 in 2026. Playa Rent's distinguishing bet is unattended access, which could widen availability while cutting staffing; the test is whether usage supports expansion beyond seasonal locations.
