What does CipherData do? Founded by chief executive Kevin Ha, who previously led AI security engineering at Amazon and Meta, it builds an AI-based detection and response (AIDR) platform. The software uses generative AI to automate alert analysis and incident response for security operations centres, cutting alert volume to roughly 1/200th and automating about 90% of manual triage.
Why now? JB Financial said it chose a cybersecurity firm as its first investment to get ahead of AI-powered cyberattacks on the financial sector. The group plans to explore applying CipherData's technology across its banking businesses.
What's the endgame? The fund, worth up to US$25.2M, is part of JB Financial's groupwide AI transformation launched this year. It aims to link equity stakes in promising firms to technology partnerships with its affiliates.
"Through this AI fund, we will move quickly on the group's AI transformation together with AI companies that have high growth potential, and build an ecosystem in which technology companies and financial groups grow together," chairman Kim Ki-hong said (translated from Korean).
But CipherData's significance is strategic rather than financial: a banking group is using venture investment to build AI-security capabilities in-house, choosing a defensive bet as its very first check.
