What each company does: BSOG operates the Midia Gas Development project, which has supplied roughly 12% of Romania's domestic gas demand since production began in June 2022. Mazarine is a European energy company that has operated in Romania since 2017.
Why now? Carlyle backed BSOG in 2015, when it was still an exploration-stage business, and led more than $400 million of investment in Midia — the first offshore hydrocarbon hub in Romania's Black Sea in over 30 years. The sale ends more than a decade of ownership as the project enters a new phase.
What changes? Little, for now. BSOG will remain the operator of Midia, and Mazarine already runs operations in Romania, making this a change of ownership rather than a shift in activity.
"When Carlyle invested in BSOG in 2015, the company was an exploration-stage business," said Bob Maguire, co-head of Carlyle International Energy Partners. Edward van Kersbergen, chief executive officer of Mazarine, said: "Romania has been a core part of Mazarine's business since 2017, and we are proud to build on that presence with BSOG."
What could go wrong? The announcement alone does not confirm Mazarine will sustain Midia's output or fund further development. The key question is whether the new owner invests to maintain production.
The signal: International capital is changing hands in a strategically important sector just as the much larger Neptun Deep project, backed by OMV Petrom and RomgazDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →, advances toward first gas in 2027. The deal reflects continued investor confidence in Romania's energy assets.
