What does Aneo do? Founded in 2008, it designs, finances, installs, and operates energy infrastructure for food retailers and logistics operators across Norway, Sweden, and Denmark. Its systems use natural refrigerants such as CO₂ and propane, and cut energy use by 30% to 50% versus traditional equipment. Clients pay via long-term contracts, avoiding upfront costs and technical burden.

By the numbers: Aneo manages refrigeration in more than 500 sites and monitors over 1,500. More than 100 stores sit under long-term contracts with 16 food retailers. In its home markets alone, installed cooling systems are valued at an estimated €1.7 billion, with roughly €180 million of new systems added yearly.

What's the money for? WSC will invest through its WSC Decarbonisation Infrastructure Fund II. The capital will fund Aneo's pipeline of cooling, heat recovery, and ventilation projects, plus expansion into new markets. The partners aim to build a leading European platform for energy efficiency infrastructure, starting with food retail.

Why now? Tightening EU rules on fluorinated greenhouse gases (F-gas) are forcing the phase-out of high-emission refrigerants, while energy costs keep rising. Many retailers lack the capital or in-house expertise to upgrade at the required pace.

What they said: "Refrigeration is essential for food retailers and constitutes, as a rule, their main source of energy consumption," said Alexander O'Rourke, chief operating officer of WSC (translated from Spanish). "We see a clear path to building a leading pan-European infrastructure-as-a-service platform."

The signal: The round pairs specialist infrastructure capital with Danfoss's technology to scale a service model beyond the Nordics. At roughly €100 million, it sits in the upper tier of growth-equity deals, a bet that food retailers will outsource cooling upgrades rather than fund them alone.
