Qatar's Startup Qatar wins 2026 UN award after helping establish 850+ startups
What's the deal? Invest QatarDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → won the 2026 United Nations Investment Promotion Award for its Startup QatarDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → initiative, which has facilitated the establishment of more than 850 startups in the country. The award, presented at UN Trade and Development's 9th World Investment Forum in Doha, recognises excellence in attracting investment in the digital economy.
Why now? Invest Qatar was selected from 48 entries representing 40 countries. Winners were judged on their approaches to investment promotion, their effectiveness in mobilising sustainable foreign direct investment, and their contributions to digital transformation.
What's the endgame? Launched in February 2024, Startup Qatar offers free and expedited business registration, AI compute credits, and tailored residency programmes. Its funding programmes have drawn over 10,000 applications and helped more than 50 startups secure upwards of $100 million.
The initiative also connects founders to capital through the Invest Qatar Gateway, where entrepreneurs can reach 16 venture capital funds established in Qatar via the Qatar Investment Authority's Fund of Funds programme. More than 500 startups have used the facility to engage participating funds.
What's the context? Qatar's venture capital market reached QR214 million across 33 deals in 2025, up 81% year over year, while Qatar Development Bank reported investing in more than 60 startups. The regional backdrop is tougher: MENA funding fell 7% in value and 33% in deal count over the first nine months of 2026.
"Through Startup Qatar, we are helping high-potential companies access the information, funding, partnerships and support they need to establish, grow and scale from Qatar," said Hamad Rashid Al-Naimi, chief strategy officer at Invest Qatar.
The signal: The award is external validation of Qatar's push to attract digital-economy investment, selected against a field spanning 40 countries. But recognition for company registrations is not proof that those 850 startups are scaling or pulling in substantial private capital — a gap Qatar's growing funding programmes will need to close.
