What's the endgame? Illumion builds optical imaging tools that reveal processes inside working batteries. Its charge photometry technology lets researchers observe individual battery particles during charging and discharging. The funding will support commercialisation, its product roadmap, and work with battery developers and industrial partners.
What's next? The money backs two products: illumionONE, for real-time particle-level analysis, and the next-generation illumionX platform, aimed at selected industrial use cases.
Why ZEISS? The deal brings a major optics and microscopy group — one that generated nearly €12 billion in revenue last fiscal year — into Illumion's effort. "By helping to visualize dynamic processes within batteries at the particle level, the company aims to deepen researchers' understanding of battery materials," said Boris Hofmann, head of ZEISS Ventures.
Chief executive officer and co-founder Christoph Schnedermann called the round "an important next step for Illumion as we translate world-class research into practical tools for battery development." The investment follows Illumion's £2.1 million seed round, led by Foresight in 2024.
The signal: At roughly $2.3 million, this round sits in the 22nd percentile for size — modest capital rather than a headline milestone. But it reflects growing industry and financial interest in tools that reveal battery behaviour in real time, as demand builds for higher-performing, more sustainable cells.
