Teamshares buys Baltimore's Pappas Seafood in employee-ownership deal

What's the deal? TeamsharesDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → has acquired Pappas Seafood Co., the Baltimore-area seafood business known for its crab cakes, for an undisclosed sum. Teamshares buys small businesses, often from retiring or departing owners, and gradually hands equity to workers.

Why now? The sale comes less than a year after founder Mark Pappas died in November 2025 at age 93. He began building the restaurant business in 1961 and grew it into a local institution, with crab cakes drawing a following that included Oprah Winfrey.

What's the endgame? Under Teamshares' model, employees receive a collective 10% equity stake at acquisition, with a goal of reaching 80% ownership within 20 years, depending on profitability. None of its acquisitions has yet hit that level.

What changes for the business? Eric Braunstein, Teamshares' food and beverage industry lead, told The Baltimore SunDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → the company plans to support Pappas' reputation while "maintaining the quality of its signature crab cakes." Pappas now joins a portfolio that pairs business ownership with financial technology and industry support.

The bigger picture: Pappas is Teamshares' first acquisition in the Baltimore area, adding to more than 90 businesses it has bought. A recent Nasdaq listing and new investor financing — including a $225 million preferred-equity investment — give it added capacity to pursue more deals.

The signal: The deal is less a restaurant merger than a succession play, offering an exit for established small businesses while promising workers a long-term stake. It marks a local test of an increasingly capitalised roll-up strategy aimed at Main Street.
