Sweden's Warmare raises $900K to build an AI accounting firm

What's the deal? Gothenburg-based digital accounting service Warmare has raised US$1.09M in an angel round from Carl-Magnus Hallberg of EQT Digital and Jens Collskog, former chief executive officer of accounting software maker Fortnox. The raise values the company at US$16.9M before the round, with Hallberg taking a board seat.

Who's behind it? Warmare is led by founder and chief executive officer Björn Elfgren, who previously founded accounting service Wint. The company, which has developed an AI engine it calls Gertrud.ai, posted revenue of US$1.51M last year and runs offices in Stockholm, Gothenburg, Karlstad, Sunne, and Borås.

What's the endgame? Warmare plans to use the money to develop its AI and acquire smaller firms. "We want to be more auditors," Elfgren said (translated from Swedish). It employs four software developers and is recruiting two more.

Why now? At least two well-funded Nordic rivals are eyeing Sweden. Danish startup Repodo raised €8.2 million in August, and Norway's Benford, whose founders come from Goldman Sachs and Palantir, took in €5 million in September. Both are already approved audit firms.

What could go wrong? Warmare's raise is far smaller than its Nordic competitors', and the question is whether it can keep pace. Elfgren is unfazed: "We are used to working with limited resources," he said (translated from Swedish).

The signal: Warmare's modest round is a small bet on a bigger shift toward AI-enabled accounting and audit services across the Nordics, where investors are backing service firms that embed AI into delivery while keeping human oversight. Elfgren expects AI to eventually drive down prices for large-company audits — a pressure that could reshape the sector.
