EIB buys €100M covered bond from Italy's Banca Popolare dell'Alto Adige

What's the deal? Banca Popolare dell'Alto Adige (BPAA) has issued €100 million of covered bonds, fully subscribed by the European Investment Bank (EIB) through a private placement. The seven-year floating-rate notes mature in October 2033 and carry the "Premium" label.

The details: The issue is Series 4 under BPAA's €3 billion covered bond programme. FitchDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → rated it AA+/Stable. Hogan Lovells CadwaladerDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → advised the Italian bank as issuer, with a team led by partner Annalisa Dentoni-Litta; Chiomenti advised the EIB.

Why now? European covered bonds are in strong demand. S&P reported roughly €133 billion of benchmark issuance so far in 2026, up 17% year on year.

What's the endgame? The EIB's subscription links BPAA's secured funding to lending support, echoing its recent €125 million covered-bond investment in BCC Banca Iccrea to finance Italian small and medium-sized enterprises.

The signal: At €100 million, this is a small, targeted transaction rather than a market-moving one. But it shows how the EIB is using secured funding to channel credit into Italy's banks and, through them, the wider economy.
