Pengana's $186M AI trust lists on the ASX with stakes in ByteDance and Databricks
What's the deal? Pengana Capital GroupDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → has completed a US$171.5M fundraising for its AI Private Opportunities Trust (ASX:AIX), a listed vehicle giving Australian investors access to private AI companies. The trust began trading on the ASX in July 2026, drawing capital from wholesale investors and advised clients.
What's the endgame? AIX is assembling a portfolio of private AI firms that already generate revenue, with early holdings in ByteDance — owner of TikTok — and data analytics company Databricks. Databricks joined the portfolio after raising US$5 billion at a US$190 billion valuation in August.
Why now? Private AI companies are commanding soaring valuations while staying off public markets, locking out most retail investors. AIX offers listed exposure to firms typically reserved for large institutions, with a single ASX trade.
What could go wrong? Neither ByteDance nor Databricks has announced an IPO, so returns depend on private-market valuations and exits that could take years. The trust runs a seven-year, self-liquidating structure, and Pengana warns there is no guarantee of an active trading market or that units will trade near their net asset value.
As of August 31, 2026, AIX reported a net asset value of $10.07 per unit and total net assets of $273.49 million.
The signal: AIX reflects a broader push to package access to late-stage private AI champions into listed products as companies stay private longer. For investors, the appeal is early access; the catch is liquidity, valuation transparency, and reliance on exits that remain years away.
