Nova Spectral AI raises $2.22M to build cheaper infrared sensors
What's the deal? Bengaluru-based semiconductor startup Nova Spectral AIDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → has raised US$2.87M in a round led by Shastra VCDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →, with participation from Equirus InnovateX Fund and angel investors. The company is developing short-wave infrared (SWIR) image sensors for defence drones and surveillance systems.
What's the endgame? Founded by IIT Kanpur alumni Anish Priyadarshi and Sanjeev Kumar, the startup builds sensors that help cameras see in low light and through smoke, haze, and fog. It aims to make them up to 100 times cheaper than existing technology.
Why now? If the cost claim proves out, cheaper SWIR sensors could open applications in defence, robotics, cars, and smartphones. The fresh capital funds that early product development.
What could go wrong? The raise backs a product-development bet, not a proven breakthrough. There is no evidence yet of commercial adoption or that the dramatic cost reduction can be delivered.
The signal: The round is small beside India's semiconductor funding surge, where chip startups raised $61.9 million in the first half of 2026. But it fits a sector gaining momentum, with government-backed design programmes helping attract private capital to local chipmakers.
