Vietnam's OCB raises $232M in bonds at 9% as funding costs climb

What's the deal? Orient Commercial Joint Stock Bank (OCB) raised VND 6 trillion (about $232 million) through three bond tranches issued in quick succession in mid-October 2026, according to disclosures to the Hanoi Stock ExchangeDealroom has a profile for this one. Details on bondholders, collateral, and the purpose of the issuance were not disclosed.

The specifics: OCB issued VND 2 trillion on October 13, another VND 2 trillion on October 14, and a final VND 2 trillion on October 15. Each bond carried a face value of VND 1 billion, and the tranches mature between October 2028 and October 2029.

Why now? The raise coincides with a broader push by Vietnamese banks to secure medium- and long-term capital as credit demand grows. Bank bond issuance reached roughly VND 120 trillion in the third quarter of 2026, up 11.8% year on year, with banks remaining the market's largest issuers.

The step-up: The deal marks a sharp jump in OCB's cost of funds. Its 2025 issues priced near 5.35%, and three earlier 2025 bond rounds raised VND 3 trillion at a peak of 8.6%. The new 9% coupon sits well above those levels, tracking a sector-wide climb that saw some bank bonds hit 10% in August 2026.

What could go wrong? Higher borrowing costs squeeze margins if lending rates don't keep pace. OCB also plans to redeem its VND 1.5 trillion OCB12529 tranche on November 20, 2026, paying VND 1.599 trillion including interest — a reminder that fresh issuance partly refinances maturing debt.

The signal: Multitrillion-dong bank raises are now routine in Vietnam, with Techcombank, HDBankDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →, TPBankDealroom has a profile for this one. OCB's amount is unremarkable by itself; what stands out is the price it paid, underlining how rising funding costs are reshaping the economics of the country's bank-led bond market.
