UAE's EDGE buys controlling stake in Italian engine maker CMD

What's the deal? EDGE, the Abu Dhabi defence and technology group, has completed its acquisition of a controlling stake in CMD S.r.l.Dealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →, an Italian maker of propulsion systems for automotive, marine, and aeronautical use. The deal, signed in Rome, follows a May agreement at CMD's plant in Atella, southern Italy. Terms were not disclosed, though EDGE has previously put the holding at 80%.

What's the endgame? EDGE wants to build a European propulsion hub around CMD's more than 35 years of piston-engine expertise. Supplying engines for EDGE's own unmanned aircraft is the immediate priority, with the company pointing to talks over high-volume orders.

The group plans to invest in CMD's facilities and research into conventional and advanced propulsion. It is also studying marine applications with its subsidiary Abu Dhabi Ship Building and other partners, while CMD continues to serve automotive customers.

What changes? CMD's current owners, the Negri family who founded it in 1989, keep a significant minority stake and stay on in management. Both sides will draw up an integration plan designed to preserve the Italian firm's technical expertise.

Why now? The deal fits EDGE's European expansion through local manufacturing, the approach behind its Paris-based EDGE Europe platform launched in June 2026. In the same month, EDGE signed a memorandum of understanding with Italy's Basilicata Region covering industrial cooperation and talent development in CMD's area.

Chief executive officer Hamad Al Marar said EDGE would support CMD's expansion through investment in "its people, facilities and technology." CMD chief executive officer Mariano Negri said combining the firm's engineering with EDGE's industrial capacity would support growth.

What could go wrong? The commercial case rests on converting proposed orders and planned capacity investment into actual production — and neither the value nor the quantities under discussion have been disclosed.

The signal: The purchase extends a wider trend of defence groups buying specialist capabilities; Germany's MTU Aero EnginesDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → acquired UAV-propulsion firm AeroDesignWorksDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → this year. For EDGE, controlling a European engine maker tightens its grip on a critical link in the unmanned-systems supply chain.
