Shunji Micro raises tens of millions of yuan to build light-based chips

What's the deal? Beijing-based Shunji MicroDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → has closed an angel round worth tens of millions of yuan, the company announced in October 2026. The round was jointly backed by CAS Star, Hillhouse Capital, and the Futeng Hanyuan Fund.

What's the endgame? The startup is trying to rebuild computing power from the physical level up, using a property it calls "polaritons" to develop high-speed electro-optic transistors. It aims to supply AI large models and intelligent computing centres with a hybrid optical-electronic base offering ultra-high bandwidth and very low power consumption.

Where's the money going? Shunji Micro said the funds will mainly go toward core product research, team expansion, and validating samples of its high-speed electro-optic modulator. The goal is to push toward industrial deployment and break past the limits of traditional electronic computing.

Why now? The round lands as Chinese interest in optical computing and optoelectronic startups heats up. In May, Guangzi Xinli raised tens of millions of yuan in its own angel round; in October, Qisuan Guangqi closed a follow-on angel round worth hundreds of millions of yuan and said its 256×256 chip had returned from fabrication for testing.

What could go wrong? Shunji Micro remains at an early research stage. It has disclosed no comparable product validation or evidence of commercial traction, so the raise reflects investor backing rather than a proven technical breakthrough.

The signal: Rising deal sizes and faster progress across peers show capital is flowing into photonics as a bet against the computing bottleneck. For Shunji Micro, the win for now is funding and the endorsement of names like Hillhouse — not yet a product.
