DMC Biotechnologies raises $18M Series C to push KeyPura ingredients to market
What's the deal? DMC Biotechnologies, a Boulder-based maker of food and cosmetics ingredients, has raised $18 million in a Series C round co-led by Inceptional Partners and Sofinnova Partners. The company makes ingredients through a process it calls "precision fermentation."
What's the endgame? The capital "will advance commercialization of KeyPura ingredients, customer adoption and portfolio expansion," the company said. In other words, it wants to turn a proven production capability into sales.
Why now? CEO Jim Flatt framed the round as a shift from building to selling. "Now we're focused on translating that capability into broader market adoption, new products and long-term commercial growth," he said in a prepared statement.
By the numbers: DMC, which has operations in Boulder and North Carolina's Research Triangle, raised a $11.3 million Series A in 2019 and a $39 million Series B in 2022. The new $18 million round lands in the 38th percentile for deals of its kind — modest relative to its larger Series B.
The signal: The raise reflects a broader pattern in Colorado, where capital is flowing to both frontier-tech startups and companies funding commercial scale-up. For DMC, the bet is that precision fermentation can move from lab-proven to market-ready.
