What's the endgame? Medikea runs a hybrid model: its app connects patients to doctors, while it operates its own clinics, pharmacies, and diagnostic labs on the ground. The company plans to serve more than 100,000 patients over the next 12 months and expand from four clinics to 10 across Tanzania by the end of 2027.
Why build it this way? Co-founder and chief executive officer Dr Elvis Silayo said the approach is deliberate. "If you layer technology on top of a broken system, you are digitising inefficiency," he said. "We rebuilt the parts we depend on so that we can deliver a better experience at a lower price and still hold a fair margin."
Does the model work? Medikea's first clinic broke even within 12 months and serves about 1,000 patients monthly, according to Madica. The investor says Medikea delivers care 25 times faster than public hospitals and 50-70% cheaper than traditional private care.
Why now? Tanzania records roughly 60 million outpatient visits a year, and healthcare spending is projected to reach $287.3 million by 2025 and $392.9 million by 2029. "We saw an opportunity not just to digitise healthcare access but to build a more affordable, continuous and climate-resilient model of outpatient care," said Maxime Bayen, partner at Catalyst Fund.
The signal: At $1.2 million, Medikea's raise sits in the top third of comparable rounds by size — a meaningful vote of confidence for a modest pre-seed in a market where access and affordability remain the core problems. Its significance now hinges on whether the hybrid clinic model can expand sustainably.
