AIIB makes first private-sector bet in Mongolia with $130M green loan to Khan Bank
What's the deal? The Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB)Dealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → has signed a five-year, $130 million senior unsecured green loan to Khan BankDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →, Mongolia's largest commercial bank. It marks AIIB's first nonsovereign financing and its first investment in a financial institution in the country.
The breakdown: AIIB acted as lead arranger and lent $80 million, with Korea Development BankDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → adding $20 million as parallel lender and Asian B-loan participants committing a further $30 million. The dual-currency structure allows drawdowns in both US dollars and Mongolian tugrik, mobilising $50 million in additional financing.
What's the endgame? Khan Bank, which serves about 84% of Mongolia's population, will channel the funds to renewable energy, energy efficiency, green buildings, pollution control, water treatment, and clean transport. The financing supports Mongolia's pledge to cut greenhouse gas emissions by 30.3% by 2035.
Why now? "Mongolia is among the top 10 countries most vulnerable to climate change, making climate action a national priority," said Khan Bank chief executive officer Munkhtuya Rentsenbat. AIIB chief investment officer Kim-See Lim called green finance "a critical agenda item for the next decade."
By the numbers: The deal sits in the roughly 30th percentile by size, placing it among mid-weight development finance facilities rather than headline rounds — but its significance is structural, not just financial.
The signal: Development lenders are increasingly routing climate finance through local banks, and Khan Bank has become a preferred conduit. In June 2026 the EBRDDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → arranged up to $170 million for the bank, and in October FMO led a $172 million syndicated facility with 30% earmarked for green lending. The AIIB loan adds another multilateral lender to that roster, deepening Mongolia's access to long-term green capital.
