Axel Springer's Döpfner pitches buying TikTok's European arm
What's the deal? Axel SpringerDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → chief executive officer and co-owner Mathias Döpfner has pitched being part of a deal to buy or carve out a stake in TikTok's European operations, according to the Financial Times. Döpfner raised the idea during a January lunch with Charles Kushner, the US Ambassador to France. The meeting was nominally convened to discuss antisemitism on social media.
Who's involved? Döpfner leads Axel Springer, the German media group that owns Politico, Telegraph Media Group, and Business Insider. The proposal targets TikTok, the short-video app owned by China's ByteDance.
The model: Döpfner is said to be citing the Trump-brokered restructuring of TikTok's US business into an American-owned joint venture, completed earlier in 2026. He has long publicly advocated a "European solution" for TikTok along similar lines, Axel Springer said.
What could go wrong? No formal bid, consortium, or financing has been reported — this is an ambition, not a transaction. ByteDance called the report "a total fabrication." Axel Springer's statement did not deny the lunch or the idea, saying only that Döpfner "would have welcomed" being part of such a push.
The signal: The pitch reflects growing European pressure to localise ownership of major social platforms, echoing the US deal that reshaped TikTok's American arm. Whether regulators or ByteDance would entertain a similar carve-out in Europe remains untested.
