Ventoá buys 30% of legaltech Factum IA to chase stalled court debts
What's the deal? Brazilian investment firm VentoáDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → has acquired a 30% stake in Factum IADealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →, a legaltech that uses artificial intelligence to trace debtors' assets in judicial disputes. The deal valued the startup at an enterprise value of about US$1.79M.
What does Factum IA do? The platform cross-references data on people, companies, ownership stakes, family ties, and court cases to help creditors collect after winning a lawsuit. It has already mapped US$102.3M in debts and reports a 60% success rate at locating assets in cases stalled for more than three years.
Why now? Factum IA estimates Brazil's courts closed the latest period with 75.5 million active cases and a 62.6% congestion rate, with more than 30 million enforcement actions stuck for lack of located assets.
The firm estimates those stalled collections tie up US$82.9B in the public sector and US$59.3B in the private sector — US$142.2B frozen in the economy.
What's the endgame? The partnership plans to widen the platform's reach to banks, financial institutions, credit-rights funds (FIDCs), securitisation firms, and law offices, built on corporate subscriptions and ongoing portfolio monitoring.
"The biggest challenge in asset recovery in Brazil is not the absence of favourable court decisions, but the distance between winning a case and actually receiving what is owed," said Menotti Franceschini, a partner at Ventoá (translated from Portuguese).
The acquirer: Ventoá, active for about two years, holds more than US$76.7M across 17 portfolio companies, with stakes averaging between 25% and 30%. It aims to grow the portfolio to US$255.8M within five years.
The signal: The deal fits a model that mixes founder-built companies with stakes in existing ones — and bets that Brazil's clogged courts leave a large, underserved market for firms that can turn legal wins into actual payments.
