Appasamy buys Germany's RUCK to expand global eye-surgery portfolio
What's the deal? India's Appasamy Associates has acquired RUCKDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →, a German manufacturer of ophthalmic surgical products and systems, for an undisclosed sum. The move adds German-developed phaco-vitrectomy capabilities to Appasamy's intraocular-lens and surgical-equipment business.
Who are they? Founded in 1978, Appasamy makes intraocular lenses (IOLs), surgical systems, diagnostic equipment, lasers, and microsurgical instruments. It produces roughly 5 million IOLs a year, with more than 100 million implanted worldwide.
What RUCK brings: The firm has more than four decades in ophthalmic surgery. Its portfolio includes the Pentasys, Qube, and Qube Pro systems for cataract and vitreoretinal procedures — products widely used by surgeons in Germany and the Benelux region.
What's the endgame? Appasamy wants to build a broader global surgical ophthalmology business by pooling complementary technologies. RUCK's engineering and development will stay in Germany, joining Appasamy's existing medical technology centres in Denmark and San Francisco.
Why now? The deal builds on Warburg Pincus's 2024 controlling stake in Appasamy — the private equity firm's largest healthcare investment in India — which gave the company capital for international expansion.
"As part of Appasamy, RUCK will have access to additional resources and capabilities to support the continued development of Qube Pro and its future product offerings," said Senthil Kumar, chief executive officer of Appasamy.
The signal: The acquisition fits a wider pattern of ophthalmic businesses buying capabilities and products. In April, Finnish diagnostics group RevenioDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → agreed to buy France's VisionixDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →, and in October, AlconDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → announced a $550 million acquisition of retinal-therapy developer Neurotech. With terms undisclosed, Appasamy's scale and valuation cannot be assessed — but its ambitions clearly point outward.
