Axcelis breaks ground on $35M Korea plant next to Samsung's P5 chip campus
What's the deal? Axcelis TechnologiesDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →, a Beverly, Massachusetts maker of ion implantation equipment, broke ground on October 20 on a $35 million manufacturing facility in Pyeongtaek, South Korea. The 18,600m² plant will add warehousing, Class 1,000 and Class 10,000 cleanrooms, and a customer training centre, with production targeted for the second half of 2028.
What's the endgame? The site expands the Axcelis Asia Operations Center, the company's only manufacturing base outside the US, which has supplied Samsung ElectronicsDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → and SK hynixDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → since 2021. Axcelis plans to shift some equipment currently made in the US to Korea, raising the share of Asian exports produced locally.
What does Axcelis make? Its Purion ion implanters fire charged atoms into silicon wafers to alter their electrical properties — a step repeated dozens of times per wafer at advanced nodes, making implanters among the highest-demand tools in a fab.
Why Pyeongtaek? The plant sits beside Samsung's P5 campus, projected by TrendForceDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → to become the world's largest semiconductor fab, with production targeting late 2028. SK hynix's Yongin cluster is a 30-minute drive away; its board approved $38.3 billion in new fab investments in August 2026.
Why now? The move puts Axcelis inside Korea's chip corridor as spending climbs. SEMIDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → forecasts global equipment sales of $165.9 billion in 2026, up 23.2%, lifted by advanced memory and HBM investment.
"This investment goes beyond simply expanding production capacity," said President and chief executive officer Russell Low. "It is an important opportunity to connect global technological capabilities with Korea's excellent manufacturing capacity."
What could go wrong? The 2028 start makes this a forward bet, not a response to immediate orders. Axcelis's second-quarter commentary noted memory-related system revenue had moderated temporarily on fab-space timing, and the company has not said how many jobs or how much capacity the plant will add.
The signal: Equipment suppliers are localising near their biggest customers as Samsung and SK hynix pour hundreds of billions into Korean capacity. Applied Materials is building near SK hynix's Yongin cluster too — a sign that proximity to the fab is becoming a competitive requirement, not a convenience.
