Flapping Airplanes raises $1B for AI research, hitting $6B valuation

What's the deal? Flapping Airplanes, a year-old AI research startup, has raised $1 billion in an early-stage round at a $6 billion valuation. Index Ventures and Lux Capital led the round, with Sequoia Capital, Alphabet's GVDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →, and Kleiner Perkins also participating.

Why now? The valuation, which includes the money raised, has quadrupled from a round in January. It lands during a record quarter for billion-dollar AI rounds, with AI accounting for 64% of global venture funding in Q3.

What's the endgame? Founded in late 2025, Flapping Airplanes is one of a growing number of so-called AI neolabs — startups focused on research rather than commercial products. Investors are backing the thesis that more data- and compute-efficient AI could become strategically valuable.

What could go wrong? The company has no product and no revenue, and the valuation leaves little room for the research to disappoint.

The signal: This is among the largest early-stage deep tech rounds on record in the US, ranking in the top 1% by amount across 3,497 comparable deals. It fits a broader rush into research-first labs, alongside Safe Superintelligence's reported $5 billion raise and TypeSafe AI's $870 million Series B at a $7.5 billion valuation.
