Northguard launches as Canadian mortgage lender, buys Quebec's Wiseday
What's the deal? Northguard Financial launched on October 20 as a national Canadian mortgage lender and servicer, unveiling an AI-enabled lending platform and the acquisition of WisedayDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →, a Quebec-based lender. The deal value was undisclosed. Toronto-based Northguard plans a national rollout across Canada throughout 2027.
Who's behind it? Katherine Gregory, founding chief executive officer of Paradigm and MERIX, leads the broker-focused lender, backed by a team of industry veterans. "After a couple of years, I realized I'm a builder and this is what makes me happy," Gregory told Canadian Mortgage Trends.
Why Wiseday? The acquisition brings more than two years of origination experience and broker relationships in Quebec into Northguard, plus a bilingual foundation. Wiseday's team will lead origination in Quebec and Atlantic Canada. "Wiseday gives us something you cannot build overnight: a proven team and the strength of real broker relationships in Quebec," Gregory said.
What's the product? Northguard's proprietary platform applies artificial intelligence across underwriting, funding, and servicing, including automated document review. The company says initial underwriting responses can come in as little as nine seconds in testing. It will start with insured, B-20-compliant mortgages, later adding alternative, MIC-style, and private lending.
The rollout. Quebec and Eastern Canada come first in the first quarter of 2027, followed by Western Canada in the second quarter. Northguard operates exclusively through brokers under a "Human to Human" principle, letting clients work digitally or reach a person when needed.
What could go wrong? Northguard is still preparing for launch, and its speed claims are company test results, not evidence of faster completed approvals or lending at scale. As chief operating officer Frank Tucci put it: "Brokers do not need another portal."
The signal: Northguard's debut fits a broader push to digitize Canadian mortgage origination. RBCDealroom has a profile for this one.
