Palantir alumni's payments startup Mural raises $15M to bank the bot economy

What's the deal? Mural, a New York-based payments startup founded by former Palantir engineers, has raised a $15 million Series A led by stablecoin issuer Tether, with participation from North Island VenturesDealroom has a profile for this one. What's the endgame? Mural gives businesses — payroll providers, software companies, and fintechs — a single account that holds traditional dollars, local currencies, and stablecoins. "[We are] building this… compliant system of record that allows for businesses and fintechs to launch new financial products on top of us," said chief executive officer Sinclair Toffa, who cofounded the company with Chris Fernandes in 2022.

Why now? Stablecoin payments reached roughly $400 billion in the first eight months of 2026, per Alvarez & MarsalDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →. Cross-border flows hit $220 billion from July 2025 through June 2026, up nearly 78% year-on-year, according to Chainalysis.

The bet: Tether's backing reflects a wager on AI agents handling payments. "Those agents will need access to payment systems that operate around the clock and can reach people across the world," chief executive officer Paolo Ardoino told FortuneDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → .

What could go wrong? The agentic commerce market is still early. Mastercard added tools in September to help banks assess AI-initiated transactions, and six major banks published shared principles for agentic commerce — but recent live transactions have largely been controlled demonstrations. Banks are still working through agent identity, authorization, fraud, and liability.

The signal: At $15 million, Mural's round sits above the median for its stage, but funding alone doesn't prove a "bot economy" has arrived. It does mark a shift in the sector's focus — from stablecoin pilots toward the payments rails that an agent-driven economy would run on.
