Tolan raises $30M for an AI companion that now does chores, not just chats

What's the deal? AI companion startup Tolan has raised $30 million, led by Union Square Ventures with participation from Khosla Ventures and Homebrew. The round doubles its total funding to roughly $60 million and values the company at more than $268 million, up from $120 million previously.

What's the endgame? Tolan, founded in 2023 by Quinten Farmer, Evan Goldschmidt, and Ajay Mehta, lets users build ongoing relationships with personalised AI characters that remember conversations and help manage emotions, relationships, and daily tasks. The new money backs a shift from emotional conversation toward practical household help, including meal planning, shopping, and family organisation.

The numbers: Tolan says it has more than 250,000 active users who logged over 70 million conversations in the past year. Annual recurring revenue has more than doubled year-on-year to the double-digit millions, though those figures are company-reported. It is not yet profitable and plans to launch its first free tier to broaden access.

Who's using it? Around 70% of Tolan's users are women and 40% are parents, Tolan's team said. One in six cares for an ageing parent — a base well outside Silicon Valley's usual early adopters.

What could go wrong? The category has a cautionary counterpoint: Character.AI, once a leading companion app, filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy, citing rising costs and legal pressures; Disney bought some of its assets. Tolan also faces competition from newer AI agents, including Meta's MuseDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →, and the broader legal risks of offering AI emotional support, as multiple lawsuits allege chatbot interactions contributed to users' suicides.

The signal: Tolan's raise tests whether an AI companion can turn large audiences into a durable business. Its subscription revenue and retention make this more than a bet on engagement — but sustaining growth while managing trust, safety, and the cost of serving frequent conversations remains unproven.
