Bison Ventures closes $160M Fund 2 for 'physical world' AI bets

What's the deal? Bison VenturesDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → has closed a $160 million second fund to back early-stage startups bringing artificial intelligence into the physical economy. The Washington-based firm will invest from pre-seed through Series B in deeply technical founders working across energy, manufacturing, biology, and infrastructure.

Why now? Bison, founded in 2021 by Tom Biegala and Ben Hemani, is betting that AI's next decade shifts from digital tools into physical systems. "We saw this inflection point proved out in Fund 1's thesis, and we're already deploying Fund 2," said Hemani.

What's the endgame? The firm calls its focus "Real World Intelligence" and pegs the category at a $50 trillion global market. Fund 2 is a 19% step up from its $135 million debut fund, and the money is already flowing to portfolio companies.

The track record: Bison's holdings include Thinking Machines Lab, which has released an open-weights model and struck a gigawatt-scale partnership with NVIDIA; CobotDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →, whose collaborative robots have logged more than 12,600 production hours; and Grid Aero, which has built a full-scale autonomous cargo aircraft.

What could go wrong? A March 2025 SEC filing listed a $175 million target for Fund 2, so the $160 million close came in below that figure. It is also far smaller than peers chasing the same thesis.

The signal: Capital keeps flowing toward robotics, industrial AI, and hardware, with Eclipse raising $1.3 billion across two funds and Transition Ventures closing a $150 million second fund. Bison's smaller raise shows that LP appetite for specialist early-stage bets in "physical AI" remains intact.
