The founder and CEO, Arthur Dubois, has a background as one of the first employees at eVTOL developer Joby Aviation and later served as VP of Engineering for Xwing, where he was involved in autonomous flight systems. This experience informed his view that a new, clean-sheet design was required to meet the market's need for a combination of range, capacity, and affordability in autonomous cargo, which led to the creation of Grid Aero. Grid Aero's core product is the "Lifter-Lite," an uncrewed aircraft described as a "flying pickup truck of the skies." It is designed to carry payloads of thousands of pounds over thousands of miles, specifically aiming for a range of around 2,000 miles with a capacity between 1,000 and 7,000 pounds. The business model is centered on creating a distributed network of these aircraft, which operate as a resilient mesh, allowing a small ground team to manage a large fleet. This approach aims to solve logistical challenges, particularly for the military, by splitting cargo across many low-cost planes, making it an uneconomical target for expensive anti-aircraft missiles.
