Inspired Capital closes $450M fourth fund, lifting AUM to nearly $1.4B

What's the deal? Inspired CapitalDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →, the New York early-stage firm founded in 2019 by Alexa von Tobel and Penny Pritzker, has closed its fourth fund with $450 million in commitments. The raise lifts the firm's assets under management to nearly $1.4 billion, von Tobel told TechCrunch.

The details: Inspired backs about 10 companies a year, writing checks between $1 million and $15 million at stages from "napkin" to Series A. Its portfolio splits roughly 45% East Coast, 45% West Coast, and 10% elsewhere.

Why now? Fund IV is a sizable step up from the firm's $330 million third fund, closed in early 2024, which followed a $281 million second fund and a $200 million debut. The jump signals strong backing for Inspired's strategy as fundraising tilts west.

The track record: Von Tobel says 12 companies across the first two funds have become unicorns — about 15% of the portfolio. Inspired counts more than 10 exits, including MosaicML, which Databricks acquired for $1.3 billion in June, and Saturn, bought by Snap.

What's the endgame? Inspired picks themes early and avoids crowds, von Tobel says. While many firms chase AI applications, it has backed physical AI and quantum computing startups, and found creator-commerce platform ShopMy through that thesis.

With capital concentrating among established managers and first-time funds squeezed, a large follow-on close reads as a vote of confidence in an incumbent, more than evidence that money is flowing back to New York.
