Israel's military creates dedicated Space Division
What's the deal? The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) is establishing a Space Division under its Planning Directorate, consolidating military projects involving orbital sensors and space-warfare technologies. The move formalises space as a distinct area of military operations.
Why now? Defense Minister Israel Katz has called for Israel to become a leading military space power. The military's multiyear Hoshen plan identifies space as a strategic priority, and the Defense Ministry has said it intends to invest heavily in a satellite constellation over the coming decade.
What's the endgame? The new division will coordinate technologies and expertise the IDF expects to become increasingly important in future conflicts. It builds on capabilities Israel already relies on, including its Ofek reconnaissance satellites — among them the Ofek 19 radar-imaging satellite launched in September 2025, which supports all-weather intelligence gathering.
What could go wrong? For now, the announcement is chiefly organisational. The IDF has disclosed little about the division's budget, operational capabilities, or timeline, leaving open how quickly its longer-term ambitions for operations beyond Earth can be realised.
The signal: Israel joins a wider trend of powers strengthening dedicated military-space structures as satellites become central to surveillance, communications, and conflict. France and others are making similar moves — but claims of a major new space-warfare capability remain unsubstantiated.
