UK's CEE raises £3.48 million Series A to tackle energy poverty
What's the deal? Centre for Energy Equality (CEE), a Warrington-based social enterprise, has raised £3.475 million in Series A funding from BGFDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →. The company designs solutions to address energy poverty and grid flexibility, working with network operators, energy suppliers, and local authorities to pilot projects directly with communities.
What's the endgame? Founded in 2022 by Andrew Ross and John McHugh, CEE wants to make the UK's low-carbon transition reach vulnerable households. The investment will fund growth in its advisory services, commercialise several products, and expand its team.
Who's involved? As part of the deal, BGF partner Jonathan Earl joins the CEE board. Monica Collings OBE, a BGF Talent Network member who has chaired NESO's Electricity Markets Advisory Council, takes up the position of chair.
CEE needed "an investment partner that shared our mission-led approach and provided patient, flexible support," Ross said.
Why now? The round builds on CEE's first four years of growth and comes as the UK pushes toward net zero. BGF investor Elle Swire said the company has "rapidly evolved into a high-growth organisation" from its social enterprise roots.
The signal: BGF, the most active growth capital investor in the UK and Ireland, last year committed £3 billion to high-growth companies over five years, including £400 million for the North West. Backing a Warrington-based energy equality firm shows growth capital flowing toward impact-driven ventures positioned at the intersection of the clean energy transition and social need.
