Context.dev raises $9M led by General Catalyst to give AI agents the live web through one API
What's the deal? Context.dev, the Y Combinator Summer 2026 startup selling one API for live web data, has raised $9M, founder and CEO Yahia Bakour announced on X on 19 October. General Catalyst led the financing, with Orange CollectiveDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → and Robinhood VenturesDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → participating. The company has not disclosed the round type or valuation.
What does it do? Developers send Context.dev URLs, domains, company names, sitemaps or files and get back clean Markdown, screenshots, brand assets, company data or structured JSON matching their own schema. Batches handle large workloads and Monitors watch pages or whole sites for changes. Context.dev runs the browsers, proxies, rendering, extraction, caching and retries underneath. Bakour says it is now used by more than 800 customers, up from the 400+ it cited at its YC launch in August.
Where it came from: The company started as Brand.dev, an API that returned logos, colours, fonts and company info for any domain, and rebranded to Context.dev in March 2026 after expanding into general scraping and AI-powered extraction. Bakour previously led engineering at Sunrun, worked at Amazon and built and sold two startups; at the YC launch the team was four people. Hadley Harris, co-founder of Eniac Ventures, also posted that he was “excited to be investors”: “Agents are only as good as what they can see.”
Why it matters: Live web access is becoming a standard dependency for AI agents, and it is getting harder: the raise lands the same week major sites including Delta, JPMorgan and Amazon were reported to be blocking agents. Context.dev competes with other agent web-data APIs such as Firecrawl, Exa and Parallel, and will need to turn its customer count into durable usage.
