China's Xinai raises $224M to expand AI chip substrate output

What's the deal? Xinai Technology, a Nanjing-based supplier of high-end IC packaging substrates for AI chips, has raised nearly US$206.3M in a Series A extension. Strategic backers Victory Giant Technology and RockchipDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → joined the round, alongside Jiangsu provincial and municipal state funds and financial investors.

Who else is in? Existing shareholders including Wuyuefeng Capital, Xiamen Lianhe CapitalDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →, Yuexiu Industrial FundDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →, Heli CapitalDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →, Teda Science and Technology Investment, Lingqing Investment, and Menghai InvestmentDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → added to their stakes. Total outside capital raised now exceeds US$687.5M, the company said.

What's the endgame? Founded in May 2021, Xinai makes FCBGA substrates used across AI computing, storage, and data transmission. Its products have cleared qualification at leading packaging firms including JCETDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →, Hua Tian, TongfuDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →, and ASE, and smartphones carrying its substrates have shipped more than 80 million units.

What's the money for? The round funds expansion of high-end FCBGA capacity, glass substrate research, and joint work on localising core materials. The company said its expansion builds on validation from top domestic AI chip firms, with output scaling as customers move into mass production.

Why now? Demand for high-end substrates is rising as AI accelerators push packaging toward larger, more complex designs. Morgan Stanley expects global high-end substrate supply to fall short of demand from 2026, with the gap widening through 2030.

What could go wrong? AI substrates demand tighter tolerances on layers, size, and warpage than conventional products, and lines face long certification and yield ramp-up cycles. Whether Xinai's expansion converts into stable, reliable output still hinges on customer adoption, yields, and delivery; glass substrates remain an early-stage bet, not near-term revenue.

The signal: The round, plus a recent US$206.3M syndicated loan, shows capital concentrating in the high-end FCBGA segment of China's AI chip supply chain. With domestic peers such as Shennan Circuits and BOE pushing their own capabilities, the race is on to build local supply for advanced chip packaging.
