Bharat Forge pours $29M into defence arm to build ammunition facility

What's the deal? Bharat ForgeDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → will invest US$32.6M in its wholly owned defence subsidiary, Kalyani Strategic Systems Ltd (KSSL)Dealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom →, which will channel up to US$22.1M into its own subsidiary, Agneyastra Energetics Ltd (AEL), to set up a facility for pour filling of ammunition shells.

The investment, disclosed in a regulatory filing on Friday, follows board approval on August 10, 2026. Bharat Forge will fund it through proceeds from its qualified institutional placement and internal accruals, with KSSL allotting equity shares on or before October 31, 2026.

What's the endgame? AEL was incorporated on July 2, 2025 to manufacture high energy explosives, gun propellants and rocket propellants, and to fill heavy and medium calibre ammunition. The infusion will operationalise the company and fund the new facility; KSSL will retain its 100% stake. AEL's investment is to complete by September 30, 2027.

Why now? The move converts Bharat Forge's defence backlog into domestic manufacturing capacity. Its defence order book stood at about US$1.52B as of June 2026, while KSSL has recently struck tie-ups with Thales on 70-mm rockets and FN HerstalDealroom has a profile for this one. Try Dealroom → on potential local production.

AEL reported no turnover in FY26, according to the filing. The investment is a related-party transaction conducted on an arm's-length basis, and no government or regulatory approvals are required.

What could go wrong? The facility still needs to be built and its products validated — a lengthy timetable that makes this a strategic bet rather than an immediate earnings driver. Shares of Bharat Forge closed at US$24.9 on Friday, down 0.94%.

The signal: The infusion reflects a wider push among Indian defence firms to localise ammunition and explosives production as global supply chains fragment. For Bharat Forge, deepening its energetics capability widens a portfolio that already spans rockets and small arms — but the payoff hinges on execution.
